BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The El Monte Owner’s Guide

Replacing a failed BFT gate motor in El Monte typically runs between $850 and $1,600 installed, depending on the model and whether the control board needs swapping at the same time. We stock BFT-compatible motors and control boards on our trucks, so most replacements happen in a single visit. The usual way an El Monte homeowner discovers the motor has failed: the gate grinds halfway open, stops, or simply refuses to move at all after years of quiet service.

BFT motors are solid units, but nothing lives forever under the San Gabriel Valley sun. When one quits, the question isn’t whether to fix it. The question is whether to piece it back together or replace it outright so it stops demanding your attention.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has put out a long line of gate motors over the years, and the naming conventions aren’t always obvious to the person standing in the driveway holding a dead remote. The most common series we see in El Monte are the Deimos sliding gate motors, the Phobos and Rigel swing gate lines, and the older LUX and Icaro models that went out of production a while back.

Here’s where experience matters. BFT encoders, limit switch configurations, and capacitor specs differ across series, even when the motors look nearly identical from the outside. A Deimos BT A400 is a 400V three-phase unit, while a Deimos BT A600 runs a different motor entirely. We match replacement motors by the data plate information on the side of the unit, not by what the housing looks like, because guessing wrong means ordering twice and leaving your gate dead for another week.

We fit OEM BFT parts when the model is current and supported. For older BFT motors that BFT no longer stocks, we use quality aftermarket equivalents that match the torque rating, capacitor values, and mounting footprint. We’ll tell you which route makes sense for your specific unit before we order anything.

One thing to know: Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent gate service company. We are not affiliated with BFT, but we have worked on their equipment for decades and keep the common failure parts on hand.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Humming with no movement. The motor receives power and tries to start, but the gate doesn’t budge. This usually points to a failed capacitor or a stripped gearbox, both common on BFT units after eight to ten years of daily cycles.
  • Gate reverses or stops mid-travel. The motor starts, runs, then reverses or halts for no apparent reason. On BFT systems this often traces back to a failing encoder or a thermal overload switch beginning to trip under load.
  • Intermittent operation in hot weather. El Monte summer heat pushes motor windings hard. If the gate works fine in the morning but dies by mid-afternoon, the motor’s internal insulation is likely breaking down under heat load.
  • Visible corrosion at the motor base or terminal block. Moisture wicks up into the housing over time, especially with swing arms mounted near sprinkler heads. Corroded terminals cause voltage drops that mimic motor failure.
  • Grinding or growling noise during operation. Gear wear inside the reduction drive. By the time you hear it clearly, the gearbox is eating itself and the motor is working against resistance it wasn’t designed for.

The longer any of these symptoms run, the more likely the damage spreads to the control board. We see it constantly: a homeowner waits out a grinding noise for six months, and what would have been a simple motor swap becomes a motor, gearbox, and board replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In El Monte, an installed BFT gate motor replacement lands between $850 and $1,600. The spread comes down to three things: the motor series, whether the control board survived, and the physical condition of the mounting hardware and gate structure underneath.

Every replacement we quote includes removal of the old motor, installation and alignment of the new unit, wiring to the existing control system, limit setup, and full cycle testing. If your control board failed alongside the motor, that adds $300 to $500 depending on the BFT model. We give you the complete price in writing before a single bolt gets turned, so the invoice matches the quote, period.

All work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If something isn’t right, we come back and make it right. No arguing, no paperwork shuffle. That’s the Keystone Standard on every job we do, from a hinge weld to a full automation replacement.

DIY or Call Us?

BFT gate motors are low-voltage in some places and line-voltage in others, depending on the model. Some units have capacitors that hold a charge even after power is disconnected. That alone is reason to leave the swap to someone who handles these daily.

What you can safely do: keep the motor housing clear of debris, check that shrubs and sprinkler overspray aren’t soaking the unit, and note the exact series and model from the data plate. That information lets us bring the right replacement motor on the first trip. Then call (424) 300-8579, and we’ll take it from there.

Victor Salinas grew up in El Monte, not far from the old Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, and spent his twenties learning gate mechanics in driveways under the summer heat. He will say it plainly: a gate that works right shouldn’t need your attention. That’s the whole point. When a BFT motor fails, we’d rather replace it properly once than patch it twice.
