We redrill or build an adapter plate rather than forcing bolts through misaligned holes and cracking the plate. On swing gates, Elite uses both pad-mounted and post-mounted hinge styles, and the hinge barrel diameter matters: measure it with a caliper, because a 1-inch barrel and a 1-1/4-inch barrel look nearly identical on a fence line but are not interchangeable. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, for structural steel we fabricate most repair sections in-house from A36 steel. For Elite-specific brackets and arms, we recommend OEM. The tolerances on those parts are tight, and a generic aftermarket arm often has enough slop to make an Elite opener strain.

Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate drags on one side during the last few inches of travel. This usually means a hinge barrel has worn or a weld at the hinge-to-frame joint is stretching. The gate dips, and the Elite motor works harder with every cycle. Left unaddressed, that dragging becomes a cracked weld, not just a worn one.
• You can see daylight through a weld joint that used to be solid. On El Monte’s summer heat, steel expands measurably. A cracked weld will open and close with the temperature, so a gap might vanish in the morning and reappear by afternoon. That’s a fatigue crack, and it will grow.

On steel posts, the hinge welds can tear out if the gate was ever hit by a car or caught a strong wind. This one is urgent because a gate hanging from one hinge can swing into the street.
• The opener is making a grinding sound but the gate is moving fine by hand. That’s often the Elite operator’s gear or chain fighting a fabrication problem: a bent track section, a misaligned chain guide, or a mounting plate that shifted. The part that failed isn’t inside the motor. It’s the steel around it.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a couple of things a homeowner in El Monte can safely check before calling. You can eyeball the hinge bolts with the gate closed and see if any are visibly loose or pulled out of the post.
